Taxes and Building Permits
The Northampton County Board Of Supervisors has expressed a philosophy that delinquent real estate taxes owed to the County must be paid before property owners may use the services of the Building Department. The practical implementation of this policy is that the first step that all building permit applications encounter is a delinquent tax check. If taxes are owed from prior years, the processing of the permit application and plan reviews stops.
We understand that this occasionally catches contractors, tenants and others by surprise, and delays work. Nevertheless, this step is mandatory for all applications, and keeping tax receipts current ultimately reduces the overall costs government services to all.
