Richard B. Tankard
Richard B. Tankard was born in Nassawadox, Northampton County and raised on a working farm next to Warehouse Creek. He attended Broadwater Academy, and graduated in 1984. Majoring in history, he graduated in 1988 from Davidson College, Davidson, North Carolina. He also studied English history and literature at Wolfson College, Cambridge University in England.
Richard returned to the Eastern Shore in 1989. From 1989 until the summer of 2008, he worked at his family’s wholesale nursery, Tankard Nurseries, supplier to landscape professionals throughout the Northeast. There he managed field and container growing operations as well as the construction of its expansion projects.
Presently, Richard and his wife, Joie, have begun a small-scale farming operation based in the Marionville area. He specializes in non-genetically modified grains.
Active in many civic organizations, Richard served as Junior and Senior Warden at Hungars Episcopal Church. He served on the Board of Directors of the Eastern Shore Historical Society and presently serves as a Director with the Northampton County Farm Bureau.
Elected to the Board of Supervisors in 2004 and again in 2007, Richard serves on various local government committees and commissions which include: Accomack Northampton Planning District Commission, Public Service Authority, and the Agricultural Forestry District Committee.
Richard, and his wife of fifteen years, former schoolteacher Joie Roderick, and their four children reside in Franktown in its old tavern and stagecoach stop that they have restored. The family enjoys raising laying hens and a pair of Jersey dairy cows. Richard enjoys spending time with his family while boating on the Bayside and Seaside creeks and Chesapeake Bay.
