The Virginia Cooperative Extension is offering two free workshops geared toward Beginning Farmers and Beekeepers.   

Spring is getting closer and that means planting season! Now is the time to start planning the garden and prepping for the days when gardeners and farmers are as busy as bees. 

The Virginia Cooperative Extension is offering a free training program for beginning farmers and beekeepers.  Please see the information below.  The workshops are free but space is limited, so please register.

Whole Farm Planning Workshop

An Introductory Training Program for Socially Disadvantaged & U.S. Military Veteran, New, Beginning Farmers and Ranchers

 

A whole farm planning workshop will be held Wednesday, February 19, 2020 from 1 PM - 4 PM at the Barrier Islands Center located at 7295 Young Street Machipongo, VA, 23405. This educational workshop is free and open to the public. Whole Farm Planning puts beginning farmers in a good position to maintain or improve profitability while enhancing their sustainability. Whole Farm Planning helps beginning farmers define long-and short-term goals to help you achieve a better quality of life at home and in your community.

• VSU Small Farm Outreach Agents as they review the Whole Farm Planning manual

•Cooperative Extension Agents for the county who can connect you with local resources

• Farm Credit representatives with instruction on how you can develop a simple, one-page business plan

• USDA agency representatives who will share information about available services and resources for farmers

VDACS State Aparist Keith Tignor will provide classroom instruction on the following topics:

Colony Collapse Disorder
VDACS Pollinator Protection Plan
Grants available for Beekeepers
Beekeeper Equipment
Beehive Components, Construction and Maintenance


The classroom instruction will be followed by a demonstration of how to open, inspect and maintain a beehive.

Attendees must bring their own bee suit and wear long sleeves, pants and closed-toe shoes in order to participate in the hands-on demonstration with live hives.
