Development Inspector

 

Northampton County is accepting applications for the full-time position of Development Inspector. This position is required to have expertise in several areas of law related to land development and conservation in Virginia. The principal role is to work cooperatively with land owners and their agents in complying with various code requirements while promoting economic progress. As such the inspector will have a full understanding of the laws and their intent so as to reasonably apply the standards to situations that arise from those proactively seeking permits for work and those who may have violated laws. In addition the individual must be able to serve as an advocate for proper development by a local constituent with several Commonwealth and Federal agencies. This is a field position which will handle all site inspections for zoning compliance and follow-up on zoning complaints and violations. Virginia Combined ES & C and Stormwater Inspector certification is required within twelve months of employment.

Requires high school diploma or GED and the equivalent of one year of college or specialized vocational training in land surveying, landscape architecture, environmental sciences, planning, civil engineering, or other related field. Also requires one year of related experience.
Excellent communication skills are essential.

Building Inspector

 

Northampton County is accepting applications for a full-time Building Inspector. The essential function of this position is to perform building inspections. Provides customer service and clerical duties.

Requires high school diploma or GED, supplemented by one year of experience in building construction. Experience as a building inspector is desired.

Requires valid Virginia Driver’s License.

Excellent communication skills are essential. This salary range $34,819 to $56, 285.

PLANNER/COMMUNITY REDEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST

 

Northampton County is accepting applications for a full-time Planner/Community Redevelopment Specialist. The essential function of this position is to provide planning technical support for the Planning, Permitting & Enforcement Department and the various board and committees. The position is responsible for assisting with planning, policy analysis, regulation enforcement, technical research and support, site/plan review, customer service, and related records and reports.

Requires Bachelor’s degree in planning or related field or at least three (3) years of related experience; valid Virginia Driver’s License; and AICP Certification or ability to obtain within two years’ of employment.

Excellent communication skills are essential. The salary range for this position is $51,750 to $83,699 based on qualifications.

Northampton County Parks and Recreation Soccer Referee

County Attorney

 

Northampton County, located on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, seeks a full-time County Attorney.

The County Attorney is appointed by the Board of Supervisors and serves as legal advisor to the Board, the County Administrator, and County departments, and boards and commissions, and other officials of the County affecting County interests.

DUTIES:

The County Attorney will:
• Report directly to the Board of Supervisors and work with management-level employees to guide County policies and operations from a legal perspective. 

• Conduct legal research, provide advice and/or written opinions on questions of County, state, and federal law, most frequently in the areas of land use and zoning, property; employment; public procurement, contracts, and general local government law; 

• Attend all Board of Supervisors meetings; advise the Board of Supervisors on parliamentary procedure; prepare resolutions and ordinances for consideration and action by the Board;

• Attend other commission and board meetings as requested, such as the Planning Commission and the Wetlands Board ; 

• Advise the Board of Supervisors and other boards and commissions and appropriate County employees on actual or possible litigation; represent the County in legal matters before the Courts; bring civil suits as directed by the Board of Supervisors, defend the County in suits brought against it; retain and supervise outside litigation specialists, as appropriate, for the same;

• Draft or "approve as to form" all bonds, deeds, leases, franchises, contracts or other legal instruments to which the County is a party or in which it has an interest;

• Draft documents memorializing all special use permits and maintenance agreements for subdivision approval; 

• Work with County staff or consultants to draft ordinances to be adopted by the Board;

• Collaborate with the County School Board's legal counsel, when requested, on legal matters;

• Provide representation for the County Department of Social Services;

• Perform related tasks as required.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

• Juris Doctorate Degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association;

• Membership in the Virginia Bar.

• Experience as a practicing attorney in local government, with preference for experience in Virginia.

• Knowledge of municipal corporation law; comprehensive knowledge of local, State and Federal laws and court decisions affecting counties; •knowledge of legislation affecting Virginia’s coastal communities, such as the Chesapeake Bay Acts and its regulations;

• Knowledge of parliamentary rules of procedure; 

• Expertise in land use and employment law; 

• Litigation and trial experience; 

• Tact; good professional judgment and ethics; 

• Ability to speak and write effectively.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

$110,000 to $170,000 based upon the background and qualifications of the successful candidate. Emergency Medical Service Provider
(Intermediate or Paramedic preferred)

Northampton County is accepting applications for Fulltime and Part-time EMS Providers of all levels (Intermediate or Paramedic preferred) in the Emergency Medical
Services Department.

This position salary pays up to $59,675 for Intermediate and $63,835 for Paramedic all based on qualifications.

Applicant must at a minimum possess the following: Commonwealth of Virginia- Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician certification, CPR, valid VA. Driver’s License with good driving record, Emergency Vehicle Operators Course, and Hazardous Materials Awareness.
