William Shakespeare's Measure for Measure

“Some rise by sin and others by virtue fall.”
BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE | DIRECTED BY KYLER TAUSTIN

On Friday, September 20, 2019 the Town of Exmore will once again host Free Shakespeare in the Park. This year the Boston, MA based touring theater company, Brown Box Theatre will perform the political drama, Measure for Measure.  This is the third year the Town of Exmore has brought the travelling company to the park for an enlightening and exciting night of  free Shakespeare. Plan to gather early with a picnic and socialize with neighbors before the show. Bring chairs and prepare to spend a captivating evening outdoors, under the stars with plenty of space for the children to play while you enjoy this timeless play. This event has been been a huge success in the past. The sets are simple yet ingenious. The timing is flawless and not a moment is wasted as the performers stride into each scene seamlessly telling the story.

Brown Box Theatre was founded by Delmarva native and Artistic Director, Kyler Taustin to bring high quality  theater to the broadest audience possible. Brown Box Theatre believes "...all people deserve easy access to the arts and the community benefits that they foster. Brown Box Theatre Project’s mission is to break down barriers that separate the masses from live theatre by bringing the very best in performance, design, and collaboration to unconventional venues and underserved destinations to reach the widest audience possible...Like the traveling medieval troupes that brought their shows from the cities to the villages on the back of a wagon, we load up our truck and bring theatre to the people."

A scene from As You Like ItThe First Annual Free Shakespeare in the Park in Exmore nearly 300 hundred people attended Brown Box Theatre's production of Hamlet. The venue was packed on all sides including the playground full of kids.

Last year's performance was the pastoral comedy by William Shakespeare, As You Like It.   We are lucky to have this opportunity in our community to see classical theater performed by the talented, professional visionaries of Brown Box Theatre. See you in the Park!

“Art is a nation’s most precious heritage. For it is in our works of art that we reveal to ourselves and to others the inner vision which guides us as a nation. And where there is no vision, the people perish.”

–Lyndon Johnson, on signing into existence the National Endowment on the Arts

About Measure for Measure

Free Outdoor Shakespeare returns with the political drama, Measure for Measure. What happens when corruption reaches the highest level of court? Explore the price of principle, and witness what happens when the law is bent by those who serve to uphold it. A duke in disguise leaves the fate of his people in the hands of a ruthless judge. A loyal sister is faced with an important decision: save the life of her brother, or uphold her honor? Join us for Shakespeare’s timeless tale of deception, virtue, and honor, and decide for yourself whether justice is served.

All Measure for Measure performances are free, outdoors, and open to all audiences; no tickets are needed. Lawn seating, blankets, and lawn chairs welcome. **With sexual harassment, coercion, and abuse addressed throughout the play, we at Brown Box recommend this play for adult or mature audiences and wish to prepare our communities, especially those for whom the portrayal of these acts may be triggering, for the themes and violence of this production.

Funding for Brown Box Theatre Project’s 2019 free Shakespeare tour of Measure for Measure is provided in part by the Maryland State Arts Council, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Worcester County Arts Council, Fall River Cultural Council, Webster Cultural Council, and Somerset County Arts Council – organizations dedicated to cultivating a vibrant cultural community where the arts thrive.
