Solid Waste and Recycling Facilities
As a resident of Northampton County, you now have improved, staffed solid waste and recycling facilities for your residential waste. The County is constructing manned solid waste and recycling facilities at several locations where you can easily dispose of your residential garbage.
The advantages don’t stop there. Attendants will be able to answer your questions and offer help as you dispose of trash. The sites will be kept clean and neat which will control vermin, blowing debris, and help protect the environment. The site will be secured during off hours to control access and unauthorized waste disposals. Safety will be enhanced for the residential user.
Recycling Facilities
The new sites will provide recycling facilities that include acceptance of plastic, glass, newspaper and cardboard, and aluminum and steel cans. Waste oil and batteries will also be collected. Large or bulky household items occasionally needing disposal by a resident will also be accepted and transported to a disposal site for you.

Questions & Answers
How is this an improvement over what we have?
A staffed solid waste and recycling facility is safer, cleaner, and more environmentally secure than the present greenbox sites offered throughout the county.
Where will these facilities be located?
Sites for the solid waste and recycling facilities were chosen with attention to population availability, accessibility, and are planned for the following localities: Birdsnest, Bayview, Hare Valley, Wardtown, and Cheapside. A sixth site has yet to be selected.
When will the facilities be open for use?
The facilities will be open every
day of the week.
Monday-Saturday: 7:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon and 2:00 - 6:00
p.m.
Sunday: 2:00 PM-6:00 PM
How much will it cost to use the facilities?
There are no fees associated with using the sites. Construction was financed by the County as a part of the Capital Improvements Program.
Is there a procedure to follow when depositing waste at one of the sites?
There will be designated entrances depending on the type of waste you are bringing to the facility and certain traffic patterns to follow once inside. These are for your convenience and ease of usability.
What about temporary holding of discarded but still useable items?
There is a "Take it or leave it" area at each waste collection site for gently-used items.
What to do with organic recyclable material such as small to medium size branches, leaves & grass that will require disposal after a storm?
Grass which is bagged can be deposited as regular household waste at the waste collection centers/existing greenbox sites. Brush, branches, tree stumps, etc., must be carried to the sanitary landfill at 20371 Seaside Road, Cape Charles, VA. for disposal. While we cannot predict future actions of the Board of Supervisors, it has been their policy in the past to waive disposal fees for disaster-related debris disposal.
What happens to the garbage that gets deposited at the solid waste & recycling facilities?
With the closure and capping of the County's Sanitary Landfill in 2009, all solid waste is transported to the King and Queen Landfill at a cost to the County of $51.60 per ton.
Brush which is delivered to the County's Sanitary landfill is burned on-site. Scrap metal is sold to a third-party vendor and counts towards the County's recycling goal.
What items will be accepted for recycling?
Plastic, glass, cardboard, aluminum, and paper.
What waste items will be accepted?
Household residential waste only. Bulk items such as household furniture, TVs, and other household generated bulky items not considered as garbage will be accepted. Waste oil and batteries will be also be collected.
What waste items will NOT be accepted?
Hazardous waste, commercially generated waste such as construction /demolition waste, yard services waste, silviculture waste (or tree farming waste), agricultural waste or by-products of commercial agricultural operations or any other waste products generated by a commercial or business operation.
Where can unacceptable waste be taken?
Household hazardous waste products will be collected on an annual basis through a “Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program” sponsored by the bi-county Groundwater Committee. Commercially generated waste are to be delivered directly to the landfill for disposal.
