Tax season is right around the corner! As we prepare for another busy season, the Northampton County Treasurer’s Office would like to share a few helpful mailing tips that may help taxpayers avoid unnecessary delays, penalties, or concerns about mailed payments.
If you prefer to pay by check, payments may be made in person at our counter, placed in the drop box at the County Office, mailed to our lockbox, or mailed to our P.O. Box.
For taxpayers mailing payments close to a due date, we recommend considering the following USPS options:
Request a manual postmark.
When mailing your payment, you may take the envelope directly to a USPS retail counter and request that it be manually postmarked. For mailed payments, the Treasurer’s Office uses the applicable USPS postmark date when determining whether a payment was mailed on time. A manual postmark can provide a clear record of the date your payment entered the mail system.
Consider requesting a Certificate of Mailing.
A Certificate of Mailing provides documentation showing that USPS accepted your mail piece on a particular date. This can be helpful if questions later arise about when a payment was mailed. Please remember, however, that a Certificate of Mailing does not provide proof of delivery or confirm that the Treasurer’s Office received the payment.
A few extra minutes at the Post Office can provide valuable documentation and peace of mind—especially when mailing a payment near a tax deadline.
