Personal Property Tax Relief Information

Personal Property

Personal property and real estate taxes are due by December 5th each year. Real estate bills are mailed in the name of the property owner as of January 1 each year. If you receive a bill for any property you have sold, please forward the bill to the current owner. If you receive a real estate bill and your mortgage company should be paying, you should forward the bill to the mortgage company. Taxes can be paid at the Treasurer's office during regular business hours Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

REAL ESTATE TAX EXEMPTION

Certain elderly and disabled persons are allowed exemptions of Real Estate taxes.

PERSONAL PROPERTY RELIEF ACT OF 1998

The Personal Property Tax Relief Act of 1998 provides tax relief for any passenger car, motorcycle or pickup truck having a registered gross weight of less than 10,001 pounds. The vehicle must be owned or leased by an individual and NOT used for business purposes. Vehicles qualified for tax relief are noted on your tax bill and show a reduction for the portion of the tax the Commonwealth will pay. For qualified vehicles, your bill is reduced by the applicable tax relief percent for the tax year on the first $20,000 of value. NORTHAMPTON COUNTY will be reimbursed by the Commonwealth for the amount of the reduction once you have paid the balance shown on your bill. If your qualifying vehicle's assessed value is $1,000 or less, your tax bill has been reduced by 100%.
