NORTHAMPTON COUNTY DAR AWARDED POMEROY DAR PATRIOT MARKER

(CAPE CHARLES, VIRGINIA) April 9, 2025 – The Northampton County Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) recently held an installation ceremony for a historical marker obtained through a nationally competitive grant award. In October 2022, the NSDAR announced a cooperative agreement with the Pomeroy Foundation to award markers to DAR chapters throughout the country who could demonstrate that the patriots of their region participated in the American Revolution, but were not memorialized by other markers. The marker reads, “LOCAL PATRIOTS: In 1776, county officials took an oath of fidelity to Virginia and provided men, food, and supplies during the fight for independence despite the threat of privateers.” The marker is installed next to the entrance of the Eastern Shore of Virginia Tourism Southern Gateway Welcome Center at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (CBBT).

The installation ceremony with by over fifty attendees was opened by Jeff Holland, Executive Director of the CBBT. DAR member and Pomeroy Marker Chairperson Gloria Bailey Johnson spoke regarding the local patriots’ revolutionary activities followed by DAR District I Director Dr. Jane Amelon completing the narratives that supported the grant application. Northampton Chapter Vice-Regent Julie Badger highlighted the recent achievements of the Chapter and Regent Katharine Lehman closed with a prayer. Members of the Battle of the Barges Chapter of the Children of the American Revolution (CAR) assisted in welcoming guests and completed the unveiling of the marker.

The Pomeroy Foundation, founded in 2005, helps people to celebrate their community’s history. The Foundation provides grants to obtain signage in the form of roadside markers and plaques. Since 2005, they have funded more than 2,600 historical markers across the United States, all the way to Alaska. They have grown to offer six signature marker grant programs in addition to marker programs funded through partnerships with non-profit, municipal and academic organizations.
